This is exceptionally adaptable to a broad range of styles, because it does not force rigid technique. It develops the voice free of clutter, manufactured sounds, and overculture. This techniques is successful for improving the voices of singers ages 8 to 85 and is particularly effective at rejuvenating senior and damaged voices.
Speech Level Singing is a technique based around the natural bridges in the voice, allowing the singer to vocalize with a connected tone from low to high and back. Traditional vocal methods are limited to using exclusively chest voice for pop and theater styles, or using a more classical sounding head voice for classical or opera (or in musical theater when the chest voice gives out). In these traditional techniques, there is generally no cohesion between the chest and head voices, limiting the singer in range and style choices. Forcing up the chest voice and forcing down the head voice can both lead to strain and ultimately, vocal nodes. Speech Level Singing trains singers in how their voice actually works, and how to strengthen the weak spots in their voice, connecting the voice through the bridges, giving the singer freedom of range, repertoire and style. The voice is a very subtle instrument that works most efficiently when there is a healthy balance of air pressure and muscle; the outer muscles are very relaxed, allowing the muscles which control the length of the cords (the pitch) to do their job without tension. Speech Level Singing technique is based around the natural bridges (passaggi) in the voice, allowing the singer to vocalize with connected tone from low to high and back. Master instructor Seth Riggs has spent the last 40 years developing this process after singing on Broadway and having hit a brick wall with numerous vocal instructors who had been unable to help him with his "break". Riggs devised exercises that teach singers a whole different vocal sensation, the "mix". The proof of the method's effectiveness is in the pudding. Mr. Riggs has over 100 Grammy winners using this method as well as 4 national Metropolitan Opera winners. No other technique has ever been able to acquire such laurels because no other technique is so effective. The Speech Level Singing Association was created in order to promote the understanding of this technique through certification of Associate Instructors and other educational programs. Benefits of the technique: Connected Sound Sing with the confidence of consistent tone throughout your range Pitch and phrasing, Sing in tune and with the flexibility to craft your vocal interpretations.
